Post Divorce Checklist

This is intended to be a resource to help with the transition and not be a fully comprehensive list. Please always refer to your Final Judgement for any items that must be completed as a part of your specific divorce.

Start any Process / Activity required by the Final Judgement right away. 

Generally, there are timelines that need to be adhered to, which can pass quickly. This could include Qualified domestic relations orders (QDROs), Transfering any Titles or Deeds, Refinancing, Transfering personal property, obtaining or updating insurance, etc.

 

If you have a Name or Address change, update all your important documents and accounts

  • Identification: Driver’s License, Social Security, Passport, etc.
  • Update contact information with Employer, Financial Institutions, Doctor, child(ren)’s school
  • Change of Address with the Post Office
  • Update Utilities / Bills as needed

Designate/Update Beneficiaries (in keeping with Final Judgement)

  • Retirement Beneficiaries
  • Beneficiaries for any Investment or TOD accounts
  • Insurance Beneficiaries

Ensure your Financial Accounts are separated and secured

  • Remove former spouse from any of your accounts
  • Close any Joint accounts as needed
  • Remove former spouse as an authorized user on your credit cards
  • Make sure you are removed as an authorized user from their credit cards
  • Change passwords
  • Review your Credit Report to ensure all changes are in place
